Baking Cookies & Mowing Lawns
by Troy McLaughlin
I attended a funeral of a friend this weekend. I watched and listened as people stood and shared stories of Ramon “Ray” Soden, of how he mowed lawns, baked cookies, and served others. They were simple acts of service, but made a world of difference in the lives Ray touched.
It was a life of baking cookies, and sharing them with others. It was a life of helping a motorist with a flat tire. It was a life of mowing a lawn that nobody knew he mowed until it was shared at his funeral.
It was a life well lived.
From his children, to his great grandchildren, Ray kept it simple. Instead of preaching to his kids and others how to live, he lived in a way that preached what he believed. It preached that others were important, and to live life well, was a life of serving others.
You and I will be defined by the simple; the simple acts of service to others, to the kind and encouraging words you share. God’s given you unique gifts to share with others around you.
Ray let his light shine before men and it pointed to His Father in heaven, you can do the same. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matt. 5:16 NIV
Practical Takeaways:
God’s given you unique gifts.
Your gifts are meant to be given away.
Serving others is simple, but it makes a world of difference.
